Giant Spider

Giant Spider first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield to fill a tactical role as a green creature capable of blocking flying threats. As the game grew in popularity, the creature became a foundational element of the color green's identity, representing the forest's defense against aerial predators. By the time it was included in the Ninth Edition core set in 2005, the card was firmly established as a staple, valued for its reliability and consistency across multiple formats.

The Ninth Edition illustration was created by artist Randy Gallegos, who provided a fresh, grounded take on the classic creature. Gallegos focused on a realistic, imposing depiction that emphasized the spider's formidable nature rather than a stylized interpretation.
