Giant Teddy Bear

Giant Teddy Bear was released in 2020 as part of the Unsanctioned set, a boxed experience for Magic: The Gathering designed to be played as a standalone casual draft environment. The set was created by Wizards of the Coast to celebrate the humorous, 'silver-bordered' design space that typically operates outside the standard competitive rules of the game. This card specifically parodies the aesthetic of traditional high-fantasy creature cards by applying it to an absurd, mundane subject.

The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who leaned into the contrast between the card's whimsical subject matter and the serious, painterly style typical of the game's creature illustrations. By depicting a massive stuffed toy with the imposing stature of a legendary threat, the artwork serves to highlight the lighthearted, meta-commentary nature of the Unsanctioned series. The design was received by the player base as a quintessential example of the set’s goal to subvert expectations and provide a refreshing break from the game's more earnest narrative arcs.
