What it does
Choose a creature or planeswalker you control. All damage that would be dealt this turn to you and permanents you control is dealt to the chosen permanent instead (if it's still on the battlefield).

Where it came from
Gideon's Sacrifice is a common-rarity instant card released in the 2019 Magic: The Gathering set War of the Spark. The set served as the dramatic conclusion to the long-running Nicol Bolas story arc, depicting the invasion of the plane of Ravnica. Mechanically, the card allows a player to redirect damage dealt to creatures or planeswalkers they control to a target creature, reflecting the character Gideon Jura’s iconic self-sacrificial nature and his role as a protector within the narrative.
The artwork for the card was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has been a staple contributor to the Magic: The Gathering franchise for many years. His illustration captures the intensity of the conflict on Ravnica, emphasizing Gideon’s heroic stance amidst the chaos of the battle. The piece was well-received by fans for its thematic cohesion with the card's effect, effectively visualizing the lore moment where Gideon chooses to interpose himself between his allies and the devastating power of the antagonist's forces.
