Where it came from
Gift Horse was released in 2017 as part of the Unstable set for Magic: The Gathering. As a silver-bordered expansion, the set was designed by Wizards of the Coast to prioritize humor, mechanical experimentation, and unconventional gameplay that falls outside the standard rules of the game. It occupies a niche space intended for casual, fun environments where players engage with meta-commentary and imaginative card designs.
The art and concept for Gift Horse were crafted to lean into the set’s whimsical tone, riffing on the trope of the Trojan Horse. By transforming a classical military ruse into a literal, cartoonish equine gift, the design team sought to evoke nostalgia for traditional storybook illustrations while fitting the chaotic, lighthearted atmosphere that defines the Unstable experience. It remains a hallmark of the set's dedication to card-based puns and playful interactivity.
