Where it came from
Gild was released in 2014 as part of the Commander 2014 card set, a collection specifically designed for the multiplayer Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. The card was created to provide black-aligned decks with a unique method of targeted removal, exchanging a creature for a colorless artifact token. The design intent reflects the mechanical philosophy of the set, which emphasized impactful, high-mana-cost spells that create interesting board states and resource exchanges in social, multiplayer games.
The card features artwork by illustrator Igor Kieryluk, whose work often leans into high-fantasy tropes with dramatic lighting and visceral themes. In depicting the transformation of a living creature into a golden statue, the art captures the macabre and greedy essence of the card’s effect. Upon its release, the card was received as a niche but flavorful inclusion, favored primarily by players focusing on treasure-themed decks or those seeking thematic flavor over peak competitive efficiency.
