Where it came from
Gitaxian Probe was originally released in the 2011 New Phyrexia set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a blue sorcery, it quickly became infamous in competitive play for its ability to provide information about an opponent's hand while cycling itself for zero mana, leading to its eventual restriction or ban in several major formats. The card's aesthetic, featuring the distinct, biomechanical horror of the Phyrexians, was conceptualized to reflect their invasive nature and obsession with perfecting organic life through metal.
This specific printing appears in the Mystery Booster 2 set, a specialized release designed to showcase a wide array of cards from Magic's history. By including the card in this curated list, Wizards of the Coast allowed players to revisit a piece of design history that fundamentally shifted how players evaluate card advantage and deck building. The art direction continues to lean into the unsettling, high-contrast style that characterizes the Phyrexian faction, maintaining consistency with the original vision established during the Scars of Mirrodin block.
