Where it came from
Giver of Runes was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons expansion, a unique Magic: The Gathering set designed specifically to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format without them passing through a Standard-legal release. The card serves as a functional reimagining of the classic Mother of Runes, a highly powerful creature from the game's early history that had been deemed too restrictive for modern competitive play. By requiring the activation of an ability to grant protection, the design balances vintage-level utility with modern interactivity.
The card was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, whose painterly style emphasizes the ethereal nature of the character's protective magic. The artwork depicts a figure channeling energy to shield others, reinforcing the card's mechanical role as a protective utility creature. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as an essential piece for white-based creature decks, quickly becoming a staple in formats like Modern and Legacy for its ability to protect key threats from targeted removal.
