Where it came from
Give No Ground is a white instant spell featured in the Eldritch Moon expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2016. The set serves as the second installment in the Shadows over Innistrad block, chronicling the descent of the gothic horror plane into madness due to the influence of the Eldrazi titan Emrakul. The card mechanically reflects the desperate defensive posture of the plane's inhabitants, designed to allow a player to bolster their creatures during the combat phase in a moment of intense narrative crisis.
The artwork was provided by the illustrator Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering card pool. His depiction focuses on the grit and determination of human soldiers bracing against an encroaching, otherworldly threat. The design was received as a functional, if situational, combat trick that captured the set's thematic emphasis on group coordination and resilience against the overwhelming cosmic corruption of the Eldrazi.
