Glacial Fortress

Glacial Fortress first appeared in the Magic: The Gathering set Magic 2010, released in July 2009. It was designed as part of a cycle of 'buddy lands'—dual lands that enter the battlefield untapped if you control a land of one of their two associated colors. This design provided a more balanced and accessible alternative to the powerful original dual lands, allowing players to fix their mana bases efficiently in mid-range decks without the steep drawbacks found in other land cycles.

The artwork for the original printing was created by artist Titus Lunter, who captured a sense of stark, frozen isolation. In the context of the Marvel Super Heroes Commander set, the card was re-illustrated to reflect the icy, mountainous landscapes found in the Marvel Universe, such as Jotunheim. It was received well by the Commander community for its utility in color-fixing, remaining a staple for any player utilizing blue and white mana sources.
