Glacial Fortress

Glacial Fortress was originally introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the 2010 Magic 2010 core set, designed as part of a cycle of dual lands intended to support multicolored decks by providing flexible mana resources. These lands enter the battlefield tapped unless the player controls a basic land of the appropriate types, a mechanic designed to balance early-game speed with mid-game utility. The card was brought back for the 2017 Ixalan expansion, which leaned heavily into themes of exploration, pirates, and dinosaurs set on a jungle-covered plane, allowing the card to feature new thematic art that aligned with the set's aesthetic.

The artwork for this Ixalan printing was commissioned from artist Cliff Childs, who aimed to capture the stark, icy majesty of a fortress rising from a frozen, mountainous landscape. Childs’s vision emphasized the cold, vertical architecture of the structure, contrasting the harsh blue-and-white color scheme of the land with the rugged terrain of the plane. Upon its inclusion in Ixalan, the card was well-received by players for both its functional role in competitive play and its refreshed visual identity, which successfully integrated a classic land design into the specific flavor of the Ixalan world.
