Where it came from
The Glasses of Urza, originally debuting in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, were re-released as part of the 1993 International Collectors' Edition. This specific set was produced by Wizards of the Coast for international markets and promotional use, featuring gold-bordered backs and square corners to distinguish the cards from tournament-legal game pieces. The card was designed as an artifact that allows a player to look at an opponent's hand, embodying the flavor of the artificer Urza’s mechanical inventions.
The illustration by Dan Frazier captures the distinct aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering, relying on a somewhat surreal and hand-drawn fantasy style that defined the game's initial visual identity. As part of the Collectors' Edition, the card was intended for non-competitive play and display, and it has since become a sought-after piece for collectors who appreciate the game's formative years and the unique, oversized packaging associated with the limited international releases of that era.
