Where it came from
Goblin Assault was originally introduced in the Shards of Alara block as part of the Jund faction, a plane defined by its aggressive, survival-of-the-fittest philosophy. The card design leans into this brutal aesthetic by forcing constant, reckless combat, which aligns with the mechanical theme of the red-aligned Jund creatures that grow stronger through sacrifice and aggression.
The Modern Masters 2017 printing, identified by collector number 95, features the classic illustration by Greg Staples. Staples, a frequent contributor to Magic: The Gathering, utilized a visceral, high-energy style to capture the chaotic nature of the goblins. This reprint was included in the set to provide players with a thematic red enchantment that reinforced the aggressive draft archetypes characteristic of the Modern Masters series, receiving a positive reception for its contribution to the set's focused Limited gameplay environment.
