Gifts Ungiven

Gifts Ungiven was originally released in the 2004 Saviors of Kamigawa set, designed as a powerful blue sorcery that allows a player to search their library for four cards with different names. It was conceived as a tool for complex, resource-intensive decision-making, forcing the player to offer their opponent a choice that often results in the player getting the two cards they desired most. The design highlights the high-skill ceiling of the game, rewarding players who understand both their own deck architecture and the psychological state of their opponent.

The version from Modern Masters 2017 features updated card frame technology and thematic art direction consistent with the reprint set's goal of curating high-impact cards for competitive formats. The illustration, originally by daren bader, was maintained for this printing to preserve its iconic look. Within the competitive magic community, this specific iteration is valued for its clean presentation and its role as a cornerstone of 'control' and 'combo' archetypes, remaining a stable, sought-after card for players participating in Modern and Commander formats.
