Goblin King

The Goblin King first appeared in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a foundational 'lord' creature intended to buff other goblin cards on the battlefield. The Ninth Edition version, featuring the specific artwork by Dana Knutson, was released in 2005 as part of the game's core set series. This edition marked a transition period for the game, as Wizards of the Coast refreshed the card frame to the modern look while reprinting iconic cards to ensure they remained accessible to players.

Dana Knutson's illustration for this iteration emphasizes the character's status as a leader among the goblin horde, moving away from the more whimsical or erratic depictions found in early editions toward a more grounded, militaristic aesthetic. Within the Ninth Edition, the card was intended to support red-based tribal strategies, providing both a power boost and a regeneration ability to fellow goblins. While some longtime players lamented the move toward uniform modern card frames, the Ninth Edition printing remains a recognizable hallmark of mid-2000s Magic design.
