Provenance

Where it came from

The Goblin King card originates from the Summer Magic set, also known as Edgar, which was printed in 1994 as a corrected replacement for the Revised Edition of Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast commissioned this print run to rectify various errors found in the Revised release, though the new cards ironically contained their own unique set of misprints and color saturation inconsistencies.

The artwork for the Goblin King was originally provided by artist Dan Frazier, whose work served as the aesthetic foundation for several core creatures in the early game. The illustration depicts the quintessential fantasy monarch, aiming for a classic Dungeons & Dragons-inspired aesthetic that defined the visual language of Magic's first year. While intended for wide distribution, the set was mostly destroyed or lost, making the surviving cards some of the most sought-after artifacts from the game's nascent period.
