Goblin Trenches

Goblin Trenches was released in 2001 as part of the Apocalypse set, the final installment of the Invasion block in Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the climactic battle between the forces of Yawgmoth and the coalition of Dominaria. The card was designed to represent the attrition-heavy warfare between the two sides, rewarding players for sacrificing land cards to produce a swarm of red and white goblin tokens, a mechanic that mirrored the desperate, scorched-earth tactics depicted in the storyline.

The artwork was commissioned from Wayne England, a prolific illustrator whose style became synonymous with the grittier, more visceral aesthetic of the era.
