Provenance

Where it came from

Goblin Welder was originally printed in the Urza's Legacy set in 1999, quickly becoming a staple in artifact-based strategies due to its unique ability to swap artifacts between the battlefield and the graveyard. The 2011 Judge Gift card variant was created as a promotional incentive for certified Magic: The Gathering judges who contributed their time to officiating organized play events during that year.

This version features updated, stylized artwork by Greg Staples, who moved away from the more whimsical aesthetic of the original card to provide a grittier, more intense interpretation of the character. The card is highly regarded by players for its technical utility and has become a sought-after collector's piece due to the limited distribution associated with the Judge program.
