Godless Shrine first appeared in the 2005 Ravnica: City of Guilds set, representing the Orzhov Syndicate, a guild characterized by its dual identity as both a religious institution and a ruthless crime syndicate. The card was designed to function as a land that provides both white and black mana, reflecting the moral ambiguity and the rigid, hierarchical structure of the Orzhov. This version, featured in the 2024 Ravnica Remastered set, serves as a retrospective release that gathers iconic cards from the plane of Ravnica to celebrate its legacy within the broader Magic: The Gathering multiverse.

The artwork for this particular iteration of the land was created by Cliff Childs, who aimed to capture the oppressive, gothic opulence synonymous with the Orzhov aesthetic.
