Where it came from
Golden Guardian // Gold-Forge Garrison was released as a promotional card for the Rivals of Ixalan set in early 2018. The card is a double-faced rare, a signature mechanic of the Ixalan block that explores themes of exploration and Mesoamerican-inspired fantasy. It was designed to offer players a utility-focused transforming permanent that turns from a creature into a land, reflecting the narrative of explorers uncovering hidden treasures in the dense jungles of the plane.
The art for the card was rendered by artist Igor Kieryluk, who focused on the imposing, construct-like nature of the Guardian to evoke a sense of ancient, dormant power. Within the competitive community, the card was received as a fascinating inclusion for midrange and control strategies, as it provided a resilient win condition that could be activated repeatedly. Its promotional version, featuring the distinct expansion set symbol and distinct frame, remains a sought-after piece for players who appreciate the unique mechanical flavor of the Ixalan sets.
