Where it came from
Goldmane Griffin was released in 2019 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2020. This set was designed to serve as a welcoming point for new players while providing strategic depth for veterans, focusing on iconic character-based planeswalker cards. The Griffin, representing the white mana color identity, features the character Ajani Goldmane, a recurring leonin hero in the game's lore who is known for his protective magic.
The card illustration was created by artist Igor Kieryluk, who has contributed extensively to the Magic: The Gathering visual aesthetic. The design emphasizes the noble, armored nature of the creature, aligning with the core set's theme of clarity and high-fantasy heroism. Upon release, it was received as a functional 'common' rarity utility card, valued primarily for its role in limited play formats where its flying ability and synergy with white-aligned aggressive decks provided tactical utility.
