Provenance

Where it came from

The Golem token, marked as collector number 25 in the Commander 2021 series, was produced by Wizards of the Coast to support gameplay mechanics found in the Strixhaven: School of Mages Commander decks. These tokens were included as physical accessories to represent temporary creatures created by various cards within the set, such as those featuring the 'Lorehold Legacies' or 'Prismari Performance' themes. By providing dedicated tokens for specific card effects, the design team aimed to streamline board states and offer players a tactile representation of their summoned constructs.

The visual design of this token aligns with the academic and arcane aesthetic of the Strixhaven plane. Illustrators for the token series were tasked with evoking the feeling of a magical construct, utilizing stone, metal, or raw energy motifs consistent with the high-fantasy setting. The token was received as a functional necessity for Commander players, valued for its cohesive art style that complements the broader set's visual identity while providing clear, readable information for use during multiplayer games.
