Grasp of Darkness

Grasp of Darkness was introduced in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Oath of the Gatewatch. The set focused on the efforts of the Gatewatch, a coalition of planeswalkers, to defend the plane of Zendikar against the threat of the Eldrazi titans. As a thematic representation of the corruption and overwhelming shadow cast by these cosmic entities, the card was designed as a mechanically efficient black instant intended to help players manage aggressive threats during the fast-paced gameplay of the era.

The card features an evocative illustration by Clint Cearley, who sought to capture a sense of dread and inevitable dissolution through his depiction of encroaching void-like tendrils. By focusing on high-contrast shadows and a feeling of claustrophobic stillness, Cearley aimed to translate the mechanical concept of negative toughness modification into a striking visual experience. It was well-received by the player base, largely due to its versatility and its ability to provide a clean answer to many of the powerful, mid-sized creatures that defined the Standard format at the time.
