Where it came from
Stormchaser Mage was released in early 2016 as part of the Oath of the Gatewatch expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a blue and red creature, it embodies the 'prowess' mechanic, which rewards players for casting non-creature spells. The card was created to serve as a versatile, aggressive utility creature for tempo-oriented decks, fitting into the set's broader theme of banding together to fight the planar threat of the Eldrazi.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, who depicted the mage in a dynamic, kinetic pose that emphasizes the intersection of elemental magic and tactical combat. Upon its release, the card was well-received by the competitive community for its efficiency and low mana cost, quickly becoming a staple in various formats where spell-heavy strategies thrive. It remains a recognizable example of the 'Izzet' color identity within the game's design history.
