Greater Stone Spirit

Greater Stone Spirit was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique in the game's history because it was designed as the long-lost 'third set' of the Ice Age block, released over a decade after the original Ice Age and Alliances sets. The creative team aimed to revisit the bleak, frozen aesthetic of the Dominaria continent's post-apocalyptic glacial era, utilizing mechanics like cumulative upkeep to evoke the harshness of the environment.

The card was illustrated by Jeremy Jarvis, who focused on depicting the elemental entity as a jagged, imposing force of nature that blended seamlessly with the icy landscape. As a rare card, it was designed to serve as a late-game threat in limited formats, though its reception among competitive players was generally mixed due to the high mana cost relative to its board presence. It remains a representative piece of the 'top-down' design philosophy that defined the return to the nostalgic themes of the mid-1990s Magic era.
