Where it came from
Greed's Gambit, indexed as card number 38 in The Big Score expansion, was released during the height of the mid-90s trading card boom. Designed to shift the game's mechanics toward high-risk, high-reward play, the card was conceptualized by the game's lead design team as a way to penalize players for aggressive resource hoarding. It reflects the era's fascination with complex, 'gotcha' style interactions that defined many competitive card games of the period.
The illustrative work for the card was completed by a staff artist known for the set's signature dark, industrial aesthetic. The visual composition, featuring a stylized scale tipping under the weight of gold coins, was intended to mirror the internal tension of the gameplay mechanics. Upon release, it was received as a polarizing addition, praised by competitive strategists for its tactical depth but criticized by casual players for its unforgiving nature during high-stakes turns.
