Where it came from
Grim Servant was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to introduce powerful, high-complexity cards directly into the Modern format, drawing inspiration from the game's expansive history while offering new mechanics and thematic twists. The card itself embodies the gothic, high-fantasy aesthetic prevalent in the set, functioning as a creature that rewards players for managing their graveyard and maintaining board presence.
The artwork for Grim Servant was created to evoke a sense of macabre utility, aligning with the dark, creature-focused archetypes found in black-aligned decks. Like many cards in the Modern Horizons series, the design process emphasized creating synergy within specific draft environments and constructed formats. It was received by the community as a functional tool for midrange strategies, praised for its specific utility in triggering effects based on permanent types entering the graveyard.
