Where it came from
Guide of Souls was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for the Modern format, introducing cards with higher complexity and power levels intended to integrate into established competitive decks. The card serves as a thematic anchor for the set's focus on life-gain and creature-based strategies, reflecting a design philosophy that prioritizes synergistic board interactions.
The card's art was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his ethereal and light-focused aesthetic. Voss intended to capture the spiritual essence of a guide, using soft lighting and divine iconography to convey the card's function of bolstering the player's life total and creature strength. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency in aggressive 'Soul Sisters' style decks, quickly establishing itself as a staple within the Modern format's ecosystem.
