Where it came from
Grim Tutor was originally released in the 1999 set Portal Three Kingdoms, but this specific version appeared as part of the Secret Lair Drop Series, a specialized program launched by Wizards of the Coast in 2019. These drops offer curated, often artistically reimagined reprints of popular trading cards, sold directly to consumers for a limited time. This particular card was featured in the 'Secret Lair: Prime Slime' drop, designed to highlight the macabre and viscous aesthetic of various swamp-dwelling creatures from the Magic: The Gathering multiverse.
The artwork for this Secret Lair rendition was provided by Daarken, a frequent illustrator for the franchise known for his dark fantasy style. The design leans into the eerie, instructional nature of the card, depicting a sinister mentor figure amidst a murky, slime-ridden environment. Like many entries in the Secret Lair series, the card was received by the community as a stylistic alternative for players looking to customize their decks with unique, thematic illustrations that depart from traditional card frames.
