Grim Tutor

Grim Tutor was originally printed in the Portal Three Kingdoms set in 1999, intended as a mechanically powerful card that allows a player to search their library for any card at a significant life cost. This specific version, issued as a promo for the Core Set 2021 release, marked the card's long-awaited inclusion in the modern frame and contemporary card legality. The reprint was highly anticipated by the Magic: The Gathering community, as the original version had become prohibitively expensive due to its limited print run and status as a staple in Commander formats.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent artist known for her evocative and detailed character portraits within the game. Her design captures the sinister, scholarly essence of the tutor, utilizing a rich, dark color palette that distinguishes it from the more muted tones of the original 1999 release. The card was well-received upon its release, praised both for its utility in competitive deck building and for Villeneuve's refined aesthetic, which updated the classic concept for a modern audience.
