Where it came from
Released as an exclusive for the 2017 HasCon convention, this double-sided Magic: The Gathering card represents a unique collaboration between Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro. The card was designed to bridge the aesthetic gap between the iconic Transformers franchise and the mechanics of Magic, featuring Grimlock in both his robot and Tyrannosaurus Rex modes to align with the game's double-faced card mechanic introduced in the Innistrad block.
The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Jason Rainville, who was tasked with capturing the rugged, metallic textures of the Dinobot leader while maintaining the signature fantasy-art style of the trading card game. Upon its release, the card was received as a novel collector's piece, praised for its thematic accuracy to the character's dual nature and its high-quality foil treatment that distinguished it from standard expansion releases.
