Provenance

Where it came from

Grinning Totem was originally introduced in the Mirage expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1996, designed as an artifact that allowed players to search their opponent's library and exile a card for later use. The card reflects the set's thematic emphasis on African-inspired folklore and mystical tribal artifacts, capturing a sense of ancient, unsettling power that was prevalent in the game's early creative direction.

The artwork for the Sixth Edition printing, which shares the same visual identity as the Mirage original, was created by the artist Brian Snaddens. His illustration features a stylized, weathered wooden figure with an inscrutable expression, effectively translating the card's mechanical function of psychological sabotage into a tangible, eerie object that has since become a nostalgic piece of Magic's mid-nineties aesthetic.
