Provenance

Where it came from

Ardent Militia was released as part of the Magic: The Gathering Classic Sixth Edition core set in 1999. This set was a significant milestone in the game's history, as it introduced the modern card frame and standardized the rules engine, moving away from the more chaotic structure of early editions to ensure greater accessibility for new players.

The card was illustrated by Donato Giancola, a highly regarded fantasy artist known for his painterly, realistic style. In this piece, Giancola aimed to capture the stoic, disciplined nature of a frontline defensive unit. Upon its release, the card was received as a functional, if unremarkable, piece of white-aligned utility, typical of the era's focus on cost-efficient creatures for limited play formats.
