Griselbrand

Griselbrand was originally introduced in the 2012 Magic: The Gathering set Avacyn Restored as a legendary demon representing one of the major antagonists in the game's lore. The card was designed to be a high-impact, late-game threat that offered players a powerful ability to draw cards at the cost of life, a mechanic that quickly cemented its status as one of the most feared creatures in competitive formats. Its design, characterized by the striking, menacing illustration by Igor Kieryluk, leans into the horror-fantasy aesthetic that defined the Innistrad block.

The 2017 Modern Masters iteration of Griselbrand featured the original artwork but utilized the updated card frame and foil treatment common to that series. Modern Masters sets were created by Wizards of the Coast to provide players with reprints of staples that were essential for the Modern format, aiming to increase availability while providing high-quality versions for collectors. This specific printing was well-received by the player base for its inclusion in a set designed to curate the most iconic cards from the game's recent history.
