What it does

Blue, black, and/or red creature cards in your graveyard have unearth. The unearth cost is equal to the card's mana cost. (Pay the card's mana cost: Return it to the battlefield. The creature gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step or if it would leave the battlefield. Unearth only as a sorcery.)

Whenever chaos ensues, put target creature card from a graveyard onto the battlefield under your control.

Provenance

Where it came from

The Grixis plane card was released in 2009 as part of the inaugural Planechase set, a supplement for Magic: The Gathering that introduced the planar deck mechanic. This item depicts the Grixis shard of Alara, a nightmarish, necromantic landscape characterized by a profound lack of white and green mana. The card was designed to mechanically replicate the setting's flavor, rewarding players for sacrificing creatures to tap into the plane's life-draining nature.

Artist Nils Hamm provided the illustration, utilizing his signature style of moody, intricate brushwork and muted, ethereal color palettes to capture the decay and desolation of the plane. His vision emphasizes the architecture of the undead and the suffocating atmosphere of the setting, which served as a departure from the high-fantasy tropes typical of the era. The piece was well-received by fans for its thematic cohesion and its success in visually defining one of the game's most hostile environments.
