Velis Vel

Velis Vel was released in 2009 as part of the Planechase supplemental set for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a shifting, chaotic realm within the game's multiverse, designed to offer players unique, randomized environmental effects that alter gameplay during a match. This particular plane is characterized by its ability to transform creatures into every creature type simultaneously, reflecting the shapeshifting nature of the world itself.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Steve Argyle, whose work is well-regarded for its dramatic flair and focus on ethereal aesthetics. The design brief focused on evoking a sense of fluid instability, using swirling, amorphous forms to visually communicate the plane's unstable identity. Upon release, the Planechase format was well-received for its innovative, albeit complex, multiplayer dynamics, and Velis Vel became a notable card among players who enjoy high-variance gameplay strategies.
