Provenance

Where it came from

Groundskeeper was released in the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 1999. The set was designed to explore the flavor of the plane of Mercadia, a world heavily influenced by merchant culture and trade guilds, with art and mechanics emphasizing the complex interactions of this setting.

The card was illustrated by Roger Raupp, a veteran artist for the game during its early years. Raupp's style often focused on grounded, character-driven depictions of the various creatures inhabiting the Multiverse. Groundskeeper was intended as a utility card for green decks, reflecting the 'land-centric' themes often present in that color's mechanical identity throughout the game's history.
