Magistrate's Veto

Magistrate's Veto was released in 1999 as part of the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set introduced players to the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its mercantile culture and political intrigue. Designed within the context of this setting, the card functions as an enchantment that reflects the bureaucratic and often restrictive nature of Mercadian governance, specifically targeting the manipulation of spells on the stack.

The card’s visual identity was crafted by artist Brian Snõddy, whose work throughout the late 1990s helped define the aesthetic shift toward more stylized, high-contrast imagery in the game. Snõddy utilized his signature bold lines and moody color palettes to depict an authority figure enforcing a mandate, mirroring the card's mechanical function of prohibiting further spellcasting.
