Where it came from
Group Project was released as an uncommon sorcery in the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Secrets of Strixhaven, a supplemental expansion themed around a magical university. The card was designed to embody the set's signature 'political' gameplay mechanics, which encourage social interaction and deal-making between players during a match. It functions as a group-hug effect, allowing all players to draw cards and gain mana, thereby accelerating the game state for everyone at the table.
The artwork was created by illustrator Manuel Castañón, who captured the chaotic, collaborative energy of a bustling Strixhaven study session. The design reflects the scholarly atmosphere of the Prismari and Quandrix colleges, focusing on the visual motif of magical energy flowing between students. Upon its release, the card became a staple in the Commander format, where its ability to manipulate resources for the entire table makes it a favored tool for players who enjoy diplomatic and communal play styles.
