Where it came from
Growing Ranks was first released in the 2012 expansion Return to Ravnica, representing the Selesnya Conclave’s ability to multiply their numbers across the battlefield. The card was later reprinted in the 2018 GRN Guild Kit, a specialized product designed to celebrate the return to the plane of Ravnica. These kits were curated to capture the unique identity of each guild, providing players with a thematic deck that showcased the mechanics and flavor associated with Selesnya’s focus on communal growth and token proliferation.
The card features artwork by Seb McKinnon, whose distinct, ethereal style evokes the mystical and naturalistic themes of the Selesnya. His illustration emphasizes the concept of a collective soul or a burgeoning forest, aligning with the design goal of creating a card that feels both mechanical and organic. Within the context of the Guild Kit, the card serves as a centerpiece, reinforcing the strategy of scaling a board state while reflecting the artistic commitment Wizards of the Coast placed on the Ravnica setting during this period.
