Where it came from
Growing Ranks was originally printed in the Return to Ravnica set in 2012, later appearing as a reprint in the Commander 2019 'Faceless Menace' deck. It was designed to support the Selesnya Conclave’s 'populate' mechanic, a signature ability that creates token copies of creatures players already control. By allowing a player to populate at the beginning of each upkeep, the card provides consistent board presence and scaling value in multiplayer formats.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Ryan Alexander Lee, who sought to capture the ordered, nature-bound aesthetic of the Selesnya guild. The visual composition emphasizes the growth and expansion of the conclave, reflecting the mechanical intent of the card to build an army over several turns. While it is a staple for token-based Commander decks, it is generally viewed by the community as a specialized utility piece that relies on the player having an existing board state to reach its full potential.
