What it does

Put target creature card from an opponent's graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. It gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step. If that creature would leave the battlefield, exile it instead of putting it anywhere else.

Provenance

Where it came from

Gruesome Encore was originally released as part of the Mirrodin expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 2003. It was designed as a black sorcery spell that allows a player to return a creature card from any graveyard to play under their control, with the drawback of exiling that creature at the end of the turn. This mechanic reflects the dark, opportunistic themes of the set, which focused on the metallic and artificial landscape of the plane of Mirrodin.

The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, who provided several illustrations for the Mirrodin block. His work typically emphasizes a grim, high-fantasy aesthetic that aligns with the game's evolving mechanical identity during the early 2000s. Its inclusion in 'The List'—a rotating selection of reprints curated for set boosters—highlights the card's enduring utility as a budget-friendly reanimation effect in various casual and niche Constructed formats.
