What it does

Put target creature card from an opponent's graveyard onto the battlefield under your control. It gains haste. Exile it at the beginning of the next end step. If that creature would leave the battlefield, exile it instead of putting it anywhere else.

Provenance

Where it came from

Gruesome Encore was released in 2011 as part of the Mirrodin Besieged expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the metallic, artificial plane of Mirrodin, the card reflects the dark narrative arc of the Phyrexian invasion, where living creatures were being forcibly converted into grotesque, biomechanical horrors. It serves as a mechanical representation of the Phyrexian capacity to reanimate fallen foes as corrupted puppets of the machine orthodoxy.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Dave Kendall, whose work is characterized by a visceral, grim aesthetic well-suited to the horror-inflected themes of New Phyrexia. Kendall focused on capturing the twisted anatomy and dark, industrial atmosphere central to the set's identity. Upon release, the card was noted by players for its thematic alignment with the set's graveyard-recursion mechanics, though it remained a niche utility piece in competitive formats.
