Provenance

Where it came from

Guard Duty was released in April 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As a common white enchantment with the aura subtype, it was designed as a functional piece of removal meant to neutralize large threats by stripping them of their ability to attack or block. The set was heavily themed around the emergence of massive, world-ending Eldrazi entities, and this card provided players with a low-cost defensive response to those imposing creatures.

The card features illustration by Kev Walker, a prominent artist whose work has appeared on hundreds of Magic cards. Walker’s depiction captures the aesthetic of a stalwart soldier standing firm in the face of conflict, aligning with the card's mechanical utility. Upon release, it was well-regarded within the limited format for its efficiency and ability to mitigate the momentum of aggressive board states, serving as a staple utility card during the set's competitive cycle.
