Guardian Angel

Guardian Angel was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the inaugural print run of Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Wizards of the Coast, the set was conceived by Richard Garfield to create a deep, strategic trading card game that blended elements of fantasy role-playing with collectible mechanics. The game emerged from a period of transition in gaming culture, offering a portable and highly replayable alternative to traditional tabletop wargames.

The artwork for Guardian Angel was illustrated by Dan Frazier. As one of the original artists for the game, Frazier utilized a watercolor style that became synonymous with the aesthetic of early Magic sets. The design sought to evoke a sense of divine protection, mechanically representing the mitigation of damage through a celestial intervention. Upon its debut, the card was received as a functional defensive utility, and while it was not the most powerful card in the Alpha set, it remains a quintessential piece of the game's foundational artistic and mechanical history.
