Benalish Hero was released as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, marking the debut of Magic: The Gathering. As a common white creature card, it was designed to introduce players to the 'banding' keyword, a mechanic intended to encourage cooperative combat by allowing groups of creatures to block or attack as a single unit. The card illustrates the lore of the Benalish people, a militaristic society from the plane of Dominaria known for their disciplined infantry and unwavering faith in the white mana color identity.

The artwork for the card was created by Dan Frazier, whose distinctive style helped define the aesthetic of early Magic sets.
