Lifetap

Lifetap was released in 1993 as part of Limited Edition Alpha, the foundational set that launched the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the game was conceived as a portable, strategic alternative to complex tabletop role-playing games. As an uncommon enchantment, Lifetap reflects the experimental design philosophy of early Magic, where mechanics were often tied to thematic flavor—in this case, the elemental opposition between green and blue mana.

The card’s distinct aesthetic is the work of artist Anson Maddocks, whose contributions to the early sets helped define the game's dark, gritty fantasy visual identity. Maddocks utilized a traditional illustration style that emphasized the strange, organic nature of the game’s magic system.
