Provenance

Where it came from

Hail Storm was released in 1996 as part of the Alliances expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third set in the Ice Age block, it was designed to emphasize the snowy, winter-themed aesthetic that characterized the setting of Dominaria during its long frozen period. Mechanically, the card reflects the set's focus on environment-based effects, utilizing a green-aligned sorcery to punish opponents for the size of their creature forces.

The card features illustration by Margaret Organ-Kean, whose work in the 1990s contributed significantly to the high-fantasy aesthetic of the early game. Her interpretation of a sudden, brutal meteorological assault was intended to convey the harsh and unforgiving nature of the Ice Age setting. Upon its release, Alliances was noted for its high power level and complex interactions, and while Hail Storm was not a competitive staple, it remains a thematic touchstone for collectors of the Ice Age era.
