Where it came from
Hand of Honor was released in 2005 as part of the Saviors of Kamigawa set, the final installment in the Kamigawa block for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on themes of epic scale and the spirit realm, drawing heavily from Japanese mythology and folklore. This card was designed as a white creature utilizing the protection mechanic, specifically tailored to counter the black-aligned spirits and demons that dominated the block's narrative tension.
The card was illustrated by the artist Todd Lockwood, who rendered the samurai in an intricate, flowing style consistent with the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Kamigawa sets. The design aimed to balance mechanical efficiency with the set's broader flavor of ancestral honor and spiritual guardianship. Upon its release, it became a notable staple in constructed decks due to its immunity to black spells, which made it a formidable tool against the prevalent mono-black control archetypes of that era.
