Where it came from
Ivory Crane Netsuke was released in 2005 as part of the Saviors of Kamigawa expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Set within the Japanese-inspired Kamigawa plane, the card reflects the block's focus on legendary spirits and the balance between the mortal and spirit realms. The artifact mechanic, which rewards players for maintaining a large hand size, was designed to emphasize the theme of wisdom and spiritual accumulation prevalent in the set's blue-aligned cards.
The artwork was illustrated by Darrell Riche, who crafted the image to evoke the delicate, tactile nature of a traditional Japanese netsuke carving. The design leans into the cultural aesthetic of the Edo period, where such miniature sculptures served as functional toggles for hanging containers from an obi sash. The card was well-received by players for its thematic consistency and its utility in control-oriented deck archetypes during the mid-2000s competitive environment.
