Where it came from
Hans Eriksson was released in 2020 as part of the Commander Legends expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to pay homage to the classic 1994 Alpha card Lhurgoyf, which features flavor text depicting a character named Hans fleeing from the creature. This card finally gives Hans a physical presence in the game, reimagining his desperate escape through a card mechanic that forces players to draw and discard cards, mirroring the chaos of his legendary encounter.
The artwork was illustrated by David Palumbo, who chose to capture the dramatic confrontation between Hans and his relentless pursuer. Palumbo utilized a dynamic composition and stark lighting to emphasize the urgency of the moment, drawing inspiration from the original 1994 flavor text. The card was received warmly by the Magic community as a clever, meta-narrative callback that successfully integrated a beloved piece of game lore into a functional legendary creature.
